Fact Check: No, Switzerland hasn't banned mammograms.

Confusion is spreading online thanks to bizarre rumours about a supposed ban on mammograms in Switzerland.

Social media posts that have circulated for months falsely claim not only that Switzerland has banned breast cancer screenings, but that the procedures increase the risk of developing the disease.

From the video description: "Can cats get bird flu? Is there cure for measles? How many measles cases in the U.S.? Is the new COVID vaccine effective? Why are cancer screenings declining?

"AMA's Vice President of Science, Medicine and Public Health, Andrea Garcia, JD, MPH, discusses post-pandemic cancer screening rates, latest updates on the measles outbreak, bird flu in cattle, H5N1 in pets, and the effectiveness of the COVID vaccine. American Medical Association CXO Todd Unger hosts."

I was pilloried on here recently for my criticism of PSA as a screening test for prostate cancer.
Here's a much more insightful letter from someone much more eminent that I am with more insights into not only PSA, but the whole diagnostic and treatment conundrum around this condition

#Health Panel Endorses New Option for Cervical #CancerScreening
Doctors routinely advise that #women undergoing screening for cervical #cancer receive Pap smears every three years beginning at age 21. Beginning at age 30 patients may go to a doctor’s office and collect their own sample to be tested for #HPV, the infection that causes most cases of #cervicalcancer, according to new guidelines issued on Tuesday by a national health services panel.

I received a letter in the mail on the last day of postal service from Ontario Health. The letter contains a kit for colorectal cancer testing. At that point, I had no idea Canada Post would be going on strike. It's only because someone on Mastodon mentioned the strike that I knew it was happening. Shouldn't there be notifications for this kind of thing?

It's a good thing I found out about the strike or my poop sample would still be sitting in a mailbox.

In case you've never received one of these cancer screening kits, be advised that the enclosed postage-paid envelopes aren't peel-and-stick. What sort of monster decided lick-and-stick envelopes were the best choice for fecal samples?

Hey everyone in Ontario with breasts! If you’re due for a mammogram, don’t wait for the letter from the province to book your appointment, because the 2 month lead time they provide is not sufficient. In KW, booking is 7-8 months out.

(I guess privatized health services don’t actually solve the problems created by austerity. Huh.)

3/ the whole reason mammogram came up from my doctor as I was having my routine cervical cancer screening test. It should be routine and it saves lives, but most women with disabilities are outside of Vancouver (and other Canadian metropolitan areas) have no access to Pap tests with their family doctor or at an STI clinic. There are no standards for accessibility for medical offices in Canada. #healthequity #accessibility #universalhealthcare #womenshealth #cancerscreening
