CORANG ARCH

This photo required a number of things to go right to get the sun flare below the arch.

It started with a 12km hike through some pretty overgrown trails. The next issue was the sun is only in the right position at sunset for about a month each year.

There is such a small gap between the bottom of the arch and the top of the hill opposite, so there was only a couple of minutes of the light like this.

Finally, the weather needed to be perfect with no cloud blocking the sun.

At Pancake Rocks on the West Coast. The original Māori name for the area is Punakairi or Punangari depending on dialect, however when it was transcribed by a European the cursive writing of the R was mistaken for a K, leading the common name to be incorrect after published in maps and news articles.

This is a great place to stop for a walk, (costly) museum trip, and to see some amazing rock formations.

Rocks, rocks, and more rocks! This trail that I hiked last week began as mostly dirt with an occasional rock, transitioned to moderately steep solid rocks (as in pic below), then much steeper rocks before the "trail" was more like a "route" over solid rock slab. Fun! Mt Monadnock, #NewHampshire. #FootpathFriday #trail #trails #rock #rocks #RockFormation #geology #mountains #hiking #backpacking #nature #NaturePhotography #landscape #photography #LandscapePhotography #outside #GetOutside

I love how #trees can grow out of cracks in boulders. Seems almost impossible. Check out this beauty-- passed it while #hiking last week on a mountain that was mostly #rock. It seems just fine growing out of the crack in this massive boulder. Mt. Monadnock, #NewHampshire. #ThickTrunkTuesday #lichen #lichens #LichenSubscribe #Mosstodon #moss #tree #root #roots #rocks #nature #NaturePhotography #landscape #photography #LandscapePhotography #backpacking #mountains #RockFormation #geology

This is a view looking up at the final approach to the summit while I was #hiking last week up Mt Monadnock in #NewHampshire. Just about to get above the treeline and enjoy some of the fun hand scrambling to the top. A great feeling seeing the summit start to come in view through the trees! #MountainMonday #PhotoMonday #rocks #RockFormation #geology #mountains #backpacking #nature #NaturePhotography #landscape #photography #LandscapePhotography #outside #GetOutside
