Everything Is the ‘#TwitterFiles’ Now

The #State Dept is using #ElonMusk’s playbook.

by Charlie Warzel

“Let’s be clear about what’s really happening here. A high-ranking member of the #Trump administration is turning federal-government #data—in this case, State Department communications—into a political weapon against perceived ideological enemies.”

Continued thread

For several people who received or saw the document, the broad requests for unredacted information felt like a “witch hunt,”…one that could put the #privacy & #security of numerous individuals & organizations at risk.

Beattie, whom #Trump appointed in Feb to be the acting undersecretary for #public #diplomacy, told #State Dept ofcls that his goal…was a “#TwitterFiles” like release of internal State Dept documents “to rebuild trust with the American public”….

The shutdown of #USAID feels similar to the #TwitterFiles. The organization has a long history of helping cover for #CIA operations, but I'm sure it also does a ton of good. Depending on your news sources, you're getting a very biased view of what they did. Why they are so important vs why they were so corrupt. Also whether it can be legally shut down the way it seems to be happening. And AFAIK only Elon and his friends have access to related secret docs and are spinning the reporting on them.

the #MAGAts have discovered that public government databases are public and are having a field day pawing through data they don't understand to accuse people they don't know of committing crimes they also don't understand (specifically "money laundering" is the new bogeyman).

here's #BillAckman declaring it obviously corrupt that political offices subscribe to a political news service via money from #USAID (except, of course, the data he's looking at makes it extremely clear the money is not from USAID).

it's very clear where this is going: #ElonMusk and co. are going to get ahold of #CIA and #FBI internal records and use them to gin up outrage akin to the #TwitterFiles nonsense and then use that as an excuse to kill the agencies.

"Everything is a conspiracy when you don't know how anything works."

p.s. wait til they find out how much money the government spends on subscriptions to newspapers...

この要求が実現したらイーロン・マスクが #Twitter 買収したあとにやってた #TwitterFiles よりえげつない #XFiles が出てきそう :tony_smirking:

This 2022 manifesto by #JackDorsey is instructive:

"a native internet protocol for social media ~ Jack Dorsey
December 14, 2022 ~ ABN"

"There’s a lot of conversation around the #TwitterFiles. Here’s my take, and thoughts on how to fix the issues identified.

I’ll start with the principles I’ve come to believe ... based on everything I’ve learned and experienced through my past actions as a Twitter co-founder and lead:

1) Social media must be resilient to corporate and government control.

2) Only the original author may remove content they produce.

3) Moderation is best implemented by algorithmic choice."

"The biggest mistake I made was continuing to invest in building tools for us to manage the public conversation, versus building tools for the people using Twitter to easily manage it for themselves.

This burdened the company with too much power, and opened us to significant outside pressure (such as advertising budgets)."

Power in the sole control of corporations

And Nazis, or Fascists

Sounds pretty "Fascist" to me
