By phylogenetic reconstruction, Daniel Thiel and Luis Yanez could show that #cnidarian #neuropeptide receptors diversified independent from #GPCRs in bilateria. This parallel #evolution and expansion confirms that cnidarians do not represent the ancestral state in neuronal signalling (as implied by terms like 'pre-bilaterian') any more than bilaterians.

Multisensory integration by polymodal sensory #neurons dictates larval settlement in a brainless #cnidarian larva https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/mec.16968
"Once a larva chooses a place to settle, it’s stuck there and will either live or die depending on the quality of the habitat... How do larvae use their senses to choose the best places to settle?"

I'll pull these two out from the previous CW, as I don't think either is in any way affronting. If you want to see the two equivalent animals (another #mollusc, and #cnidarian) see the previous post.
Here's an amended description:
The first image is the beautiful radial skeleton of the Blue Button, or Porpita porpita, a colony organism (when alive), made up of cooperating hydroids. It drifts in the surface waters, using its stinging tentacles to capture small copepods, but will also hunt crabs and fish.
Next is a mollusc, which preys on the former, amongst other things.
It’s the beautiful violet sea snail, Janthina janthina, a free-floating snail that uses a raft of bubbles to keep it on the sea’s surface where it preys on hydrozoa. (Unlike the first, this was taken back home with my D700, not the iPhone3GS).

Temporal gene expression patterns in the #coral #Euphyllia paradivisa reveal the complexity of biological clocks in the #cnidarian-algal #symbiosis https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.abo6467
E. paradivisa exhibits tolerance to #CoralBleaching and survives without algae during prolonged darkness... Its #BiologicalClock functions even at a depth of 65 meters underwater and in almost complete darkness.
