This paper nature.com/articles/s42255-025 is interesting. They tested Vitamin B3 in a pill that is

designed to release nicotinamide [a form of Vitamin B3] in the lower small intestine and colon

And found:

1️⃣ Acute COVID-19 might be safely and easily reduced in severity and duration
2️⃣ In general, no improvement in Long COVID rates (here termed Post-COVID syndrome, PCS)
3️⃣ BUT, for people with recovery-like trajectories, they found superior outcomes. This takes a few quotes:

The subgroup was

participants at risk who had shown improvement in the primary endpoint or one of the three key secondary endpoints in the acute phase of the disease

In [this] subgroup, a significant benefit of nicotinamide was also observed in participants with PCS (nicotinamide: n = 48, PCS score 8.33 ± 0.84; placebo: n = 57, PCS score 11.82 ± 1.03; absolute difference: −3.49; 95% confidence interval, −6.1 to −0.86; P = 0.010

Now we all know how Long COVID isn't one single disease. Let's assume for a second that other results that suggest at least one subset has a microbiome component are correct.

As they say "life finds a way" so it would make sense that remnant gut populations could rebound over time and that this subset of LC sufferers might be more likely to have recovery trajectories. (This while we have no treatments for any subset.)

This obviously won't stop the pandemic nor its consequences, but still, here's hoping that there's no patent encumbrance on coating B3 for lower-gut delivery.

Of course here in BC we'll get access the same time we get access to Metformin. ⌛

NatureNicotinamide modulates gut microbial metabolic potential and accelerates recovery in mild-to-moderate COVID-19 - Nature MetabolismIn a prospective, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, supplementation with a combination of conventional and gut-targeted nicotinamide was safe and effective in ameliorating COVID-19 symptoms.

@3goodthings

Not excactly a good thing that I slipped on my way out of the bath tub yesterday night, but with that as the scenario:
1. We own crutches ourselves.
2. I did not hit my head, the #pcs (Post Concussion Syndrome) makes me ridicilously afraid of head setbacks.
3. I have the very best husband, who spoils me with bedside coffee. 🥰
And even 4.!
It is the left foot that hurts, so I will be back in the car in a few days. No clutch in our "new" car.

"New York Times bestselling author Cory Doctorow returns to the world of Red Team Blues to bring us the origin story of Martin Hench and the most powerful new tool for crime ever invented: the personal computer.

The year is 1986. The city is San Francisco. Here, Martin Hench will invent the forensic accountant — what a bounty hunter is to people, he is to money — but for now he’s an MIT dropout odd-jobbing his way around a city still reeling from the invention of a revolutionary new technology that will change everything about crime forever, one we now take completely for granted.

'Picks And Shovels' is a high-tech crime thriller about the “weird era of PCs” in the early 1980s, when Reaganomics, the tech industry, multilevel marketing, and the AIDS crisis all converged in San Francisco. "—Jacobin

I wonder if the #Trump despised, hated (#liberal) law firms that gave in to help his #MAGA agendas, were the ones to edfit the #tariffs to exempt #Smartphones, #PCs and #Tablets from #China and #SouthKorea⁉️

This what #EricHolder said in the video

"#Trump is getting these law firms to help him negotiate trade deals or work on this whole tariff, controversy"

"...these firms need to stand together. If we do, I think we ultimately win"

"Post Covid Syndrome and Cognitive Dysfunction – Aetiology and Possible Treatment" - I think figure 1, the arrows going towards "cognitive dysfunction" should be bidirectional - but otherwise, yet another lay of the land paper implicitly but strongly suggesting that there is a pressing need for research focus on LC and ME/CFS treatments: cdn.fortunejournals.com/articl

The Guardian and BBC are both leading on this story this morning.
Once again we have a broad brush statement from politicians that civil service performance needs improving without any real evidence.

Performance related pay seems to be on the cards again, my experience of it was not good. Hours spent collecting and documenting personal evidence as well as reviewing staff's evidence. Then an annual series of comparison meetings to decide where people fitted on the arbitrary bell shaped curve that determined who got what. The individual bonuses involved were not much, IIRC the year I got a top award the amount was around £400.
I really hope this doesn't return as it was a waste of time, a divisive exercise for no real gain for anyone.

To improve performance they need to:
Drop competency based criteria and bring back minimal qualifications for new starters.
Improve pay conditions.

ING tegen beroofde klant: fuck you

@xeniac I know that this is the case, but it's not a technical unavoidance despite the #RaspberryPi being a non-#UEFI - #arm device.

  • Even on the old, #32bit boards.

The solution in that regard would be to boot into a #live / #setup mode like with #RaspberryPiOS for #i586-based #PCs and extend it to a setup that allows creating a new custom image with #LUKS - #FDE enabled and properly encrypted.

  • OFC on a #Pi0W that would mean one would've to plug in a 2nd MicroSD with a USB-Adapter but that's not the Point.

I'm not even demanding much, just a simple #TUI / #CLI setup like @ubuntu / #UbuntuServer has with basic customizations.

  • I'm not even expecting it to go so far as to offer including #dropbear - #SSH in the #initramfs so one can boot into the encrypted install and unlock it remotely. Just gimme the blinking cursor at the boot asking me to enter the password for the encrypted partition...
