#AntiAmerican sentiment can manifest in the weirdest ways. For instance, I'm currently #translating a museum exhibition & while I often suggest including imperial measurements in parenthesis for the benefit of foreign (i.e., American) visitors, the project manager and I have basically decided... meh, let's not bother.
Petty? Probably. But it's another example of the little paper cuts I think Americans will find themselves increasingly encountering thanks to their two-year-old bully.

A new use for #ChatGPT: Interpreting ambiguous copy? There's this weird sentence in a document I'm #translating (gosh, that almost never happens, right? #IYKYK). So I plugged it into the #LLM & asked it to interpret the meaning (not #translate), which it did with typical confidence. Then I asked if there was anything unclear, & it correctly identified the ambiguity but also confirmed the original interpretation.
Interesting. I’ll continue testing with harder examples.
In #translating this exhibition on the Ursuline nuns, my research has led me to the wikipedia page for the great 18th-century #French painter Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, known above all as a portraitist (I've always had a fascination for portraiture). Her numerous self-portraits alone make me think she would be a cool friend to have. What a fascinating figure. Someone needs to write a historical-fiction novel based on her life!
Seriously, go look at her portraits!

#Translating a story with two levels of reported dialogue. The narrator reports what the characters say. Then one of the characters recounts big chunks of dialogue. Finicky with the different quotation marks.
Happy Publication Day! My translation of Isis Aquino's story "The Train" is out in 'Extrasensory Overload: An anthology of Speculative Excess' from Angry Gable Press! This is my 2nd published collaboration with Isis, and my 1st time sharing a TOC with so many writing buddies! :D

Currently #translating a museum exhibition, and I just adapted a text to include the English #translation of a book.
I of course considered it my duty to also #NameTheTranslator in my adaptation (even if he has been dead for over a century).

I am #translating an exhibition on witches and have (fortunately) discovered a new (to me) false friend: conjure/conjurer.
In English, conjure means to evoke or make appear.
In French, conjurer means to cast out or ward off.
So glad I caught this one. A few French sentences make a lot more sense to me now! Just goes to show that if you don't understand the source text, don't simply assume it was poorly written (even though that's so often the case!)
I've written a blog post of advice for editors, translators, & authors on publishing translations (focused on short speculative fiction). It addresses some of the common chafing points I've encountered over the years. If anyone has questions (or suggestions for strengthening the blog post), please let me know - trying to make this a useful resource for everyone!

A museum exhibition I'm #translating contains the scientific name for the American robin: *Turdus migratorius*. I looked it up, & “turdus" actually means "thrush," but if you’ve ever made the mistake of letting robins nest under your eaves, you'll appreciate the exquisitely apt, if accidental, play on words. I love robins; they're beautiful, are fine singers, & are delightful harbingers of spring. But I will henceforth think of them as “migratory turders."

Have you ever worked for free? I've done some free (brief!) test translations, and I've volunteered my content writing and translation services for good causes.
But: I wouldn't create a whole blog post or a commercial translation project "for exposure" or the hope of more projects to come.
This old sketch always makes me laugh. Foil, Arms & Hog nailed it!

If the Kalevala had not been translated into English, Tolkien might never have gotten into it. Galadriel would talk funny.
If the Kalevala had not been translated into Swedish, Finns themselves might not have gotten into their own national epic. Akseli Gallen-Kallela would have had so much spare time.
In the last Filtrit-video of the year I go through a history of translations of the Kalevala, and compare three different English translations of a specific poem, "The Battle of the Sampo" (Kirby, Magoun, Bosley).
Like, subscribe, share, use as fodder for dinner party conversations with language nerds etc.

Today, I'm #translating tools for companies to self-assess their commitment to #inclusion and #diversity, from Spanish to English.
#Writing, and #translating, and writing about translations, can often be a lonely, isolating road, so I try to find a sense of camaraderie in the company of fellow authors mutely addressing one another via intertextual citation. So here's me, noting (Eric Purdue's translation of) Agrippa, writing to Trithemius, to dunk on—inter alia—Giorgio Anselmi, whose tractate on astral #magic I'm translating (and writing overly verbose footnotes to).
