One time, many years ago, I saw two people arguing. They were on FULL honk, screaming top-volume, and one of them grabbed the other by the shirt and yelled "You know what you can do? You wanna know? You can roll yourself up, post yourself to Texas, and--"

--and then a train went by, and I missed the last bit.

My brain filled in one possibility: "go f*** an armadillo."

I doubt that was it, though. I still want to know how that thought really ended.

I was never a believer. Because of this, I'm fascinated with deconversion stories. I've probably read hundreds over the years.

I often hear the sentiment "It's pointless to argue with [obstinate group]. They will never change their minds."

Most of the atheists in my country are ex-Christians and living proof that this sentiment is false.

What most folks consider to be forgiveness is actually just acceptance. They just stop arguing with what happened.

True forgiveness requires you to completely remove the stories you're telling about the experience. Most people never get there because they aren't on a healing path. Unless you're on a healing path or you're working towards self-mastery, you aren't likely to work this hard.

For those that are on the healing path, acceptance is the first step. This is what will free you to begin to heal yourself more fully. This is what frees you to go down the path of self-mastery if you want to.

Have you accepted those experiences you had back there yet?

Can you get around the stories so you can just stop arguing with what happened?

It's not easy all the time, but it is definitely possible. I've done it and you can do it too.
