#TIL that there's a body temperature rhythm that can be dissociated from the circadian rhythm! In retrospect, it makes sense given that (from what I know) lower temperature helps most humans fall asleep easier

This book from Whitrow continues to marvel with a chapter on biological clocks, touching on the role of time keeping in a range of phenomena from bird migration to honeybee dance, photoperiodism in plants, circadian rhytms in fiddler crabs, circannual rhythms in hibernating mammals, deer antlers and in psychotic patients ... easy to forget scientists had found out a lot by 1972. Observation and note taking was (and continues to be) the name of the game. What they were lacking were the molecular mechanisms.

Starting at around 56:00, discussion of potential for peripheral organs to influence brain activity. Unfortunately, the sound quality is poor.

It's a very interesting topic and I'm also curious about periodicity in cyclic vomiting syndrome, migraine attacks, and other paroxysmal conditions.

" Sleep rhythms may be disrupted for several days after flying, particularly with extended flights. Eastward air travel is particularly disruptive to sleep schedules. The number of days required for a traveler to return to pre-flight sleep patterns is about one day for each 90 min travel westward compared to one day per 60 min travel eastward.

Another means by which air travel may lower seizure threshold is through the effect of air cabin oxygen desaturation. As previously noted, at high altitudes the rate at which oxygen can diffuse into the blood is diminished. While most travelers tolerate prolonged exposure to decreased ambient oxygen during flight, individuals with epilepsy may be at risk. Lower inspired oxygen during flight may trigger compensatory hyperventilation. Fried argues that seizures can result from metabolic instability created by hyperventilation. The resultant decreased carbon dioxide intake results in reduced cerebral blood flow and oxygen supply to the brain. In addition, hyperventilation increases blood pH (alkalosis), which makes oxygen less likely to be released to tissues. Hyperventilation has long been known to induce seizures for those with idiopathic epilepsy and controlled breathing can result in reduced seizure frequency."
